type='text'>Ohhhh Suspension!

Yay more to update!

Well after 4 yrs of civic ownership, the best suspension ive so far managed to "roll" on is my ITR shocks and Tein springs.

No more :D

Having done a deal with an ITR owner who was selling up, im now in the possession of some Cusco Zero 2 shocks and Cusco Rear Camber adjusters!

Info here:

<img src="http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/6678/everythinggd4.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at src="http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/5112/bottomsep3.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" />

Ohhh how blue and shiney!

$2380 worth of suspension for a mere £200 + my old ITR shocks :) Unfortunately they didn’t come with any C spanners or setup instructions. But fortunately my bro had some old Tein C spanners that fitted for the preload and donated to me, and his new apexi coil over c spanners are perfect for the height adjustment - so i took one and made a copy at work :)

So after a quick clean up and "service" (stripped down, cleaned, oiled and rebuilt) they looked thus:

And after some digging decided on the following "settings":

So I got home today and made a start on removing my temporary setup from Mr_Bens panda (some Group N rally shocks) over to Cusco shineyness!

Being 5 level’s of Adjustment ive currently set them all to Level 2 and ill see how that feels, I know for sure its going to need to settle, and then re adjust the ride height, and also ive yet to fit my rear camber adjusters - and they defiantly need to go on!

Oh and the compulsorily wheel shot

Ill hopefully get some pictures of the car Sunday at the meet once its had time to settle out a little and ive washed the car :p

Thanks for looking!

Chris_Gee

8 months on...........

Firstly happy new year to everyone! bit late, but there you go!

Secondly wow cant belive its been 8 months since i finished my little tamama, how time flys!!

Cars been so far ace! a few niggle problems but nothing huge or too problematic! and i thought i would just keep you up to date with whats been going on, as its has been a good while.

Other than general servicing, changing the cam belt etc, ive managed to do a few more improvments to the car since last july, naturally all done myself.

Namely:

Tein S/Tech Lowing Springs
mFactory Oil cooler and oil filter relocation Kit
Bride Recliner Seat (i think its a brix but im not 100%)
Full set of Eagle F1's

Not a heck of alot, had to pay my insurnace off, then christmas came and now im saving for tuning :)

Anyway heres a load of piccys i just took today, it was clean, but then while trying to find a good piccy taking place it got mucked up :(

Anyway enjoy:

The cooler kit has made a great differance, over summer my oil temps where reaching 110 deg C or more after some vtec'ing, now in the uk our summers arnt that warm and since my long term plans are to eventually move to malta, i thought it would make a worthy investment! And its work well, over winter my avererage driving temps have been around 70-80deg C, maybe 85 with some vtec'ing, so im happy with it!

Also just last week i picked up a bride (brix) seat for a mear £50! it needed some fixing, and has had some stiching done to one of the sides - but otherwise is perfect! so i made me a seat rail at work using the std civic seat rails, designed it all up on autocad and made it! its amazing the differacne a good seat can make to your driving, i know its not like they "add power" or something silly, but it gives you such a feeling for what the car is doing and thus more confidence!

Well just a quick update for now, ill try to post what goes on a bit more regular, especialy with the show season coming fast!

thanks!

Chris

Day 18 - Finaly finished!

Day 18

Damn what a hot day, but my dad came over early and we got stuck in!

1st up was fitting the drive shaft back in, after removing it totaly and cleaning it all up - it popped back in just fine - and stayed locked in place - hurray!

So next up we fitted the front bumper back on after spraying the grills black, and we re-fitted a few bits of under tray and such. I also sorted out why i had no reversing lights - the fuse had gone - well at least it was an easy fix !

So we then set the tracking - would it make it off the drive? you know it would!

And once set i took it for a gentle drive to the nearest shell garage for some optimax goodness!

By now the oil temp was at a steady 85-90 deg C, it was only 2pm and i felt the need to erm.. .test VTEC?

Good lord is all i can say! Wheel span in 1st, get into 2nd and vtec kicked in at 6K ish and i short shifted at just over 8K - opps still in B16A2 mode - into 3rd and i took her to 8.5K - come on it can go more!! 4th gear up to 9K.

Holy jeeebus its quick - i quickly ran outta road and left myself plenty of stopping distance as to bed the brakes in gently.

Boy am i impressed and happy - and a little scared, i need to take it easy for a good while till i get used to the power and the steering is.... well yes its heavey compared to P/S - well durrr, but with only 2.5 turns lock to lock - it don't take much turning to make a turn anyway, so like everything else its gonna take some getting used to!

Ive also got some odds and sodds to sort out - like the jdm wind deflectors and jap size number plates and giving it a damn good wash! but all in good time! more importantly it needs a new cam belt - im not taking any chances of it snapping! :D

And so onto one of my fav parts - the thank yous!

Without the kind help and support of the following people none of this could have happened:

To start it has to be my dear long time suffering wife Claudette for putting up with..well me and my constant car related stuff and spending too much money and always being in the garage

My parents! As i did so i had to take a sharpe left turn to get onto the road - and bang - suddenly lost drive! My mind was racing what have i missed? whats gone bang? why now!

So me and my dad pushed it back onto the drive, i thought it could be the clutch, or the release bearing or god knows what - either way a gbox off job - cue 6 hrs removal, and expencive fix and 4 hrs re-fit! Only to then be told by my dad that the other day when he put the drive shafts in - he wasnt sure if it "clicked" in ok or not! Which is fortunatly exactly what had happened the drive shaft has popped out - no big deal, just a bit more work. Only problem is we didnt have a ball joint splitter and im going to a theme park tommroow so its now all called off till wednesday - then it will run and be spanky!

yay in bits again

And some spooomage for you all!

Anyway the spoon sounds sweet i hope you will agree (if not :P i dont care i like it lol) and the engine seams to be running sweet, just need to sort everything else lol

And then wednesday - we shall see if we can make it out onto the open roads!

Chris_Gee

Day 15 - She runs!!!!!!!

At long last the day has come, the day i turned the key and it fired to life!

To start i finaly fitted my HKS oil temp guage and wired it all in ready, then my mate Mr_Ben came over, so i started by getting my Spoon cat back system off his car!

After struggling for over an hour it was finaly off - sodding stuck bolts grrr!!

However the fun had just begun - i left ben fitting his std system back on, while i attempted to fit my spoon to my car, which wasnt have any of it!

I found out the "JDM" sized CAT - the end flange was way too big to connect to my std EK9 exhaust manifold, thus menaing i couldnt get my exhaust on today :( so im hoping a local custom exhaust place can sort me out tommroow and ill be well away ;)

However it wasnt gonna stop me starting the beast up - it would just be stupidly loud!

SO there we stood, myself at the wheel, ben, my wife - her sister all watching - I clicked the key... it was trying hard bless it... then we discovered a fuel leak so i switched off before it even fired up!

After that anti climax we tryed again - and....

She ran!! Whoop!

And with only two fault codes and no reverse lights !

Faults codes where 7 - Throttle angle sensor - whcih i 1/2 expected to play up as it was damaged when i got the engine, so i "fixed" it, but clearly not well enough!
So i removed the one from a D16Z6 Throttle body i had spare and fitted that - all sorted!

The other was a code 20 - which is the electronic load detector - now this is ment to pic up engine revs when you, for example, tunr on the headlights and the radio - sapping energy - it automaticaly pics up engine revs to compensate - but i dunno where to start with this yet im gonna consult the honda workshop manual later on.

And the reverse lights - i have no idea im sure its a fuse or soemthing!

Anyway im over joyed! it ran, and it ran sweet!

We then set up my Fuel pressure regulator to 40psi (ive read its ment to be 38psi or 40-45psi at idle so i figured 40 would be ok for now - pls email me if you know for 100% sure) then drove to the end of the driveway and back to check the clutch was working ok!

So im happy as anything :D 2 yrs planning, 10 months finding the parts and money, and 15 days of building - not to mention copiouse amounts of blood, sweat, swearing, bruising, stress and tears - but its been worth it :D

Tommorow i hope to sort the exhaust out and get that on, get myself insured then take her out for my 1st ever test drive - and yes i will be driving like a big girl and taking it easy :P

Thanks

Chris Gordon

Day 12-14 .... 99% done the last 1% is a biatch.....

Day 12 - 14 - tbh i havnt got much done, but then theres not much left to do so heres a quick round up:

Day 12 - Drained thro the brake fluid and clutch fluid, and finaly fitted all 4 wheels on the ground :D

Very happy with how it looks, tho its in "4x4 mode" with a huge arch gap, so im hoping it will seatle down once its driven - otherwise ill have to get myself so decent lowering springs as a quick fix till i can get me some loverly coilovers.

Thus i fitted nthe final touches to the engine bay - the clutch and power steering res's so now theres nothing more to add!

Over all a very productive day and a happy one!

Day 13 - I didnt get anything done at all!

Day 14 - Decided it was time to get the dash sorted out once and for all. So after sorting out alot of wiring and adding an extra 12v cig lighter socket (to power my ipod) and some kill switches, the interior is finaly completed!

As you can see the interior thats going in, is now all in - it needs a darn good clean tho! and the cf sun visors need some "trimming" to make the work properly, but all in good time!

I also re-fitted my side skirts, and fitted my black JDM spoiler with 3rd brake light - this was originaly on my old VTi - thus why its black, but i quite like it in black it "goes" with the white/black combination so it might stay black :)

I also fitted the battery and got to test some of the sytems, like the lights, heater controls, the alarm, imob and fuel cut controls etc and so far it all works fine - which is a good sign! and too right i did :D

Got me some paint and cleaning products form town, and then spent roughtly 6 hours cleaning the engine bay and drivers door (cant get to the passenger one due to the side of the hosue being in the way :P) and ohhh they are sooo spanky!

I didnt bother using any "cleaning" products or anything, ive used a good few of them in the past and found them a waste of money - so it was just soapy water and a lot of hard scrubbing and graft! i think it was worth it!

I Also used some white spirit oto get the glue gunk off the drivers door, and more on the front slam pannel to get masses of over spray off it from a previouse bad spray job.

My dad also made a start on the tiny bits of rust on the rear arches!

Day 6 - The big spray!

The day was a hot one, a mate came over to help with some clenaing and spray work, which ment i got to do my least favorite job ever - sanding down! booooo hisss it is SOOOOOO dull.... i would much rather be bolting bits together but what can ya do...

As you can see... i love doing it so...

Anyway we got to spraying the door handel's, door mirrors, the rear arches, and the front bumper grills.

Mirrors and door handles now looking spnaky, but still needed a little more work so my mate took them home with him to finish off over the wkend.

We also sorted all the little rust patches on the car:

It was also the end of the ESi, it went to the big scrap yard in the sky on the back of a trailer - thanks for the memorys ESi!

Thnaks to Chris Ellis for taking the piccys!

Day 7 - The re-build begins!

So so much to do, so so little time, with the wkend looming - and plans made to get the engine in on day 8 - i had a hell of alot to get done today so i made an early start - alarm set of 7am - and by 7:05 i was in the garage making a start!

So i started off by laying everything into the garden into its own sections.

I figured it would make life easier to find parts if all assosiated parts had there own area, and for the most it worked!

So i started by getting the ESi's fuel tank, and fuel/brake lines fitted, easy enough job realy, and then while i was at it, i made a start on fitting the rear hubs, brakes and connecting everything up.

However with my memory beign as bad as it is, i keep having to re-learn how parts went on, and in which order - so i fitted and removed and re-fitted parts over and over which was annoying but thats life i guess.

I also took the opertunity to clean and re-underseal the rear arches anbd all under the back end.

By the end of the day i had one rear hub fully fitted, the fuel lines, the fuel tank, brake lines, hand/parking brake cables all bolted up and ready to go for the engine on day 8..

Sorry for the lack of pictures only i did take more but my camera has decided to screw them all up :(

Day 8 - The B16B cometh!

Well firday i had my good freind ben gray stay over so we could make an early start on the project - due to not getting everything done on day 7 i had much to do before the engine could go in!

So the interior/ecu loom, front sub frame, steering rack, all the brake lines, MBC, clutch lines etc all went in! Btw we also found out that the Dx sub frame was never ment to hold a Power steering rack - so ive had to adapt" it to hold my teg rack - one of many "DX" odd qwirks we discovered as the day went on!

And by 10:30ish we where ready to start putting the engine in, at this point my other mate ben had come over to help - yay two bens it was hardly confusing when asking "ben" to pass me a screwdriver or 12mm socket lol

Fortunatly on thursday (day 7) myself and my brother had gone and borrowed a better engine crane, and i had lost all hope in the 1950's crane of being able to lift anything more than a small bag of sugar! and im glad we did :) So to start we cleaned out the garage to make room and then hooked the 6B to the crane!

Me?? excited?? oh you betcha! ive only been weaiting 10months for this day to arrive! so i was buzzing to say the least!

So the 1st "test" fitting, it went ok we had to remove all but two of the engine mounts to make more room, but finaly had to abort as we had picked the engine up a bit off centre and i wasnt happy we could get it in without breaking something!

So back out it came, a re-shuffle of how it was being held, and then back on with the job!

My favourite tool was never far from hand ;)

It was a seriously hot day (for the UK anyway!) but with a regular supply of cold drinks and sandwiches (thanks hunny!) we got it in and all the pipes, connections etc plugged in and ready to go, however due to having no interior i couldnt start the car yet that would have to wait for another day. I also got all over excited and fitted my radiator, JDM plastic head lights, Vision amber corner lights and CF bonnet - i was grining like an idiot by the end of the day! we all worked solidly till around 6pm, then buggered off to the pub for a bite to eat and lots of cold drinks!

Big big thanks to both the bens for their help - i really couldnt have done this on my own so thankies muchos!

Day 9 - a total none event in terms of the project, i decided that after 9 days of pritty much 6-12hrs a day - we all went to JAPS show at thorsby park, which ment for a very early start - and me getting a lift!

Had a damn good day off tho, a good car show, nice relaxed atmosphere with good mates!

Yay munkee!

Thanks to Ben and Dave for the passenger rides/lifts!

Day 10 - Back on with the project!

Ahhh dont you just love mondays? not really, today was the LSi's MOT re-test after failing last week, so again i didnt expect to get a heck of alot done today on the project. After I dropped clay off at work, and procceded to my parents for its "pre mot re-test" inspection, and then its mot, which this time it passed with flying colours - hurray!

Then it was then off to a local scrap yard for a few odds anmd sods that i needed for the project - so i didnt get going on the car till gone 2pm - knowing full well that i would have to stop at 4:30 to go get clay.

So i got the passenger side rear hub all on and connected up including the brakes etc and that was pritty much it!

However another good thing was that my Energy suspension bushes for the shift linkage, steering rack and front 24mm roll bar arrived from the states - so once i got back from pickjing up clay i got the front cross member off again and fitted all the bushes!

The bushes where pritty easy to get out, and then replace, using the bench vice and my trusty hammer got the job done i nno time at all really!

Guess where my socks came up to lol!

So day 11 holds refitting the cross member, fitting the shift linkage, and the front antiroll/sway bar, get the drive shafts in, the front hubs on and all the front brakes connected up - alot to do and as normal not alot of time to do it. It also looks like its gonna be another hot day so time for more sun cream!

Ill try and update tonight but again it depends how tired iam so please do bear with me and thanks for reading!

Chris Gee

Day 4 - Full strippage achived - how to kill a prefectly good car in just 36hrs!

Right so i know its now officialy Day 5 morning, but let me off :P

Day 4 - as expected - a late start, took Mrs_Gee to work, and then took her car for its mot - which it promptly failed due to one of the handbrakes not working at all.
TBH the guy doing it was a totaly arsey sod, just cus i was 5 mins late (As i forgot my v5 at home went back to get it, and then got told, once i arived late, that i didnt need it anyway).

Another pet hate of mine - drum brakes - how 1950's do you wanna get ? too many springs and clips and you need 12 pairs of hands to chnage one side , so i had arranged already to get a rear disk set up, and the front 262mm disk set up form a VTi - but typiclay i wont get to fit them for a few weeks so all i needed was it to get thro its mot - even scrape thro, then it would all get chnage - but ohhh no never so simple.

So my day consisded of removing the whole hubs from the dx, and then with out any prep work - removing the crap LSi onesa nd swapping them over - talk about recipy for disaster!

But to my amazment it all went ok, not one stuck bolt - tho it did divert time from my project, but with my partents help (dad helping me, and my mum with the tea and toast again :D) we got it doen just intime to go pick my wife up from work at 4:30.

So while my dad picked her up for me, i got stuck in properly on the dx, got the back end up in the air, already had the rear hubs and shocks off from earlier in the day.

And no - i wouldnt recomend leavng a car on 4 axle stands taht are uneven for long - but its very secure trust me :)

What was also much use and fun wa smy dad lent me his trolly thing:

So i had great fun rolling around under the car on it - its alot more comfortable for sure!

So i got to work on the fuel/rear brake lines, and fuel tank - which i had gotten all the bolts undone on day 3 - so it was pritty easy, just trying not get get crushed by the weight of a 1/2 full (or maybe 1/2 empty ;) ) fuel tank was erm.... fun? but i managed it and after a mear 4 days or 36 working hrs i had taken a fully working good mpg nippy little car - into a bare shell - what would Mr honda say...

I also removed the side skirts - expecting to find some rust? but only a tiny bit was found, and unpon closer inspection i found that all the usualy EG civic muck/water traps that cause rust had been sealed up with sealant - thus why its lasted so long :D some one had great forsight - much to my benifit :D

So this is pritty much the only bit of surface rust on the car:

its just a tiny bit of bubbling, and orange, the rest is just muck lol

So today (being Day 5) i plan on taking it easy, off into town to get some cleaning struff, and some frost white NH-538 spray paint, then my dad is gonna teach me how to de-rust and spray properly a car, and then wash the engine bay and interior :)

So ill post up again tonight

Laters

Chris_Gee

Day 3 - Engine swaps and toasters......

Ahh jeez what a day, between the crap weather, a broken bath, a crap engine crane, blowing the fuse for the whole house and a mad digging dog - its been a very very long day - but one thats overall gone very very well!

After an early start at 8:15am i started to remove the hubs on the car and pop out the drive shafts. All was going fine, while the plumber came around to take a look at the damage i managed to do to the bath last night - i.e i split it  its not like im fat and heavey i promise! anyway the plumber came around to sort that, and then my good mate Rich (spoon_civic on many of the forums) came over about 10am to give me a hand today.

So with the departure of the plumber - with much "ooohhh" and "tuting" about costs over this, that and the other (like i care i rent the place so i don't have to pick up the bill :P) we got back to the job at hand.

Our 1st job was to go and pick up a rather ancient 1950's engine crane, which ive used before to remove the ESi's engine with limited joy. So rich being a star drove me over and we fitting the stupidly big heavey structure into his boot (hes got a stripped out EK3 so it was an easy fit ;) )

Once back home, the fun and games began: hooking up the crane, unbolting the D13, all was going well - till the crane decided that it didnt want to lift any higher up and would never clear the slam pannel - so we had to come up with a new plan to get the engine free from its cage.

While alot of thinking and mulling it over happened, my parents decided to pop around to see how i was getting on - including bringing over my sisters Dog - joey!

To say hes hyperactive is an understatement - he proceeded to dig up most of the rear garden while we continued on with the car.

Meanwhile in the Gee cave...... We had dropped the engine onto a little "trolly" thing my dad brought over, and then proceeded to lift the front end of the car up with the crane about 3ft in the air (supported with axle stands), then "sliding" the engine out from underneath - dont it just sound so easy? While my mum was in the kitchen provinding plenty of cups of tea, slices of toast and finding out that i had tripped the breaker for the house earlier in the day when she found the toaster wouldnt work lol!

So with rich doing all the lifting ;)

The engine was out in about 3-4hrs fromt start to finish with the delay, and messing around trying to get the shift linkage pin out (we left it in, in the end).

4pm soon came, we had got much achived for the day, and rich needed to be heading home, as did my parents as they had to take joey to my sisters.

But it was still early and i didn't wanna loose the momentum of the day so i carried on. Removing the front hubs, and front brake pipework, then removing the steering rack and front cross member - but i didnt stop, i started working front to back removing all the bolts that hold the fuel/rear brake lines to the car, and unbolting every nut or bolt that needs to come free inorder for me to remove the fuel lines, rear brake lines, the fuel tank and even the rear hubs/suspension - Happy - oh you bet iam :D

Ready for a clean up now:

I also removed the front radiator/air con stands - as ive said before im fitting my full width teg rediator so they needed remvoing to make way for it - i also got to release some pent up anger lol! they just need sanding down with the dremel-a-tron!

At this point i feel im a fair bit ahead of schedule - but tomorrow i wont get much time to work on the car as ive gotta drop my wife at work for 8:30am, then take her LSi for its MOT - meaning i wont start on the project till 11:30am ish, and ill have to stop early (around 3:30-4pm) in order to clean up and pick her up from work.

But with all the bolts/nuts undone i hope to get the fuel tank, fuel/brake lines and maybe even the rear hubs/suspension off even in the short time i have!

If i can achive this, ill be a full day ahead and it means i can devote the whole of wednesday to cleaning up the engine bay and inside of the car, before i re-fit everything - if anyone has any good ideas for cleaning products to use to remove oil/gease and muck from engine bays and interirors - pls do get in touch!

Well thats all for now, as im very tired and its already 9:20pm - time for me and wifey to spend some time together :)

Thanks for reading!

Chris Gordon

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://project-tamama.blogspot.com/2006/06/day-3-engine-swaps-and-toasters.html' title='Day 3 - a more lazy hot day.....

Well day 2 cometh, and tbh i knew before i started i didnt have a heck of alot to do, with people comeing over it was gonna be more of a chat and talk day, than a get stuff done day.

So i set out at around 10am (yes im a lazy git) spent a bit of time in the morning on the webulon chatting on msn and the usual.

So i started, but didnt have much of an atention span, i kept starting one job, lasting maybe 10mins, then while going to the garage for a tool being distracted and starting on something else... its just been one of those days i guess.

Anway today i got the heater out (finaly the little sod tryed to fight with me - it should know better), also removed the interior wire loom which as you may or may not know runs all the way into the front head lights - que my distraction as i then started to remove the pedals, and the clutch lines and master cylinder, and some of the brake lines....

Anywho here how the interior looks on the end of day 2, all ready for a damn good wash down!

Which all lead to me deciding to prep the engine for removal tomorrow - disconnecting all wires, all pipes, fuel lines, coolant lines etc, so nows its just held by the 5 mounts and the gear linkage.

Its like a little over crowded D13 island in a vast sea of white lol

Im hoping to borrow an engine crane 1st thing in the morning then the engine shouldnt take above an hour or so to get out (he says - talk about cursing the job) And i even have an 8mm drift ready for the gear linkage pin - *shock and awe at the prep skills* lol

Since i needed access to the gear linkage - and i needed the engine out, i thought i might as well disconnect and remove the "chavy" exhaust that was fitted to the car when i got it, to my shock it came off rather easy, tho i did just cut the rubber mounts in half to save time.

Its at this point i would like to rant at exhaust fitters all over the world: For the love of all that is good and pure in the world - use std size sodding nuts and bolts please!!!! theres nothing quite as annoying as scrambling on your back under a car thats maybe 2" away form your face, only to find the bolts used arent a 10/12/14/17/19 - you know STD HONDA SIZES!!! no sir'y bob, they used a 13mm/11mm so back to scrambling out, to grab what you hope is the right size, and back under again - repeat till the right size/combination of spanners/sockets is found.

I ask: is it so hard to find a 12mm bolt and 12mm nut??? i mean please we arnt odd and french ffs (so to you frenchies but pugs do use 13mm's and the such :P )

And breath.....

So having finaly got the stupid 13mm and 11mm bolt/nut combo off (god could they have used longer bolts i mean really!) i found out that the chavy rear back box was none other than a lovery bit of british engineering in the form of a peco big bore - PMSL.

For those not acquainted with this peice of highly crafted performance part, they are mild steel in design (thus rust like no end), craply made (mine "rattles" when shaken lol) made to "look" that part, and sound crap! More commonly found on "modded" saxo's, corsas, novas (and i dont mean chevy nova's that would be a good car) and other such pos cars.

Dear lord...

My biggest annoyance about it is that they have cut into the rear bumper to make this shite excuse for a back box fit - thus killing a good rear bumper - so it will have to be chnaged in the future when i have some spare cash flow - boo and sodding hiss i say !

On other notes, a mate came over mid afternoon and i helped him remove his aftermarket manifold and replace with std on his gray EK3 - and very easy it was to do as well, and a lovely looking clean car! - so must thank him kindly for his donation of some real JDM y0! beer :)

Japans #1 beer so it proclaims, and tho as some ppl will know - im no beer drinker (much prefure vodka stright) im tempted to try some - in the name of science naturaly ;)

Also my garage and back yard are now a total mess, car parts/tools/general crap and oil stains everywhere so i feel it only right to yet again say a big thankyou to my wife for putting up with me, for her on going support and for stepping over countless car parts on her way to putting out the washing lol - love you always hun!

yay mess....

Im trying to keep anything out doors as well covered as i can, the english weather being as unpredictable as ever you never know when it will rain, or be 28deg C in the shade!

So thats it for today, day 3 holds an earlyish start tommroow to get the engine crane and then make a start for maybe 10ish, if i have time i also wanna make a start on getting the rear hubs/fuel tank and lines etc off, and i might give the interior a clean - depends on how all the rest goes i guess !

Thanks for reading as always, i hope its intresting!

Take care

Chris Gordon

Day 1 - A new hope.....

Ahh the start of the project - you gotta love the feleing, the excitement.... oh great and the rain!!! I mean after 3-4wks of nice sunny weather, the day i start it has to rain.

But i didnt let that get me down, ive got a timke scale to stick to and im gonna have to work rain nor shine.

Fortunatly by the time i had finished cleaning the garage and moving things around the weather was better so i could make a start without getting too wet!

So the plan was stripping the car - as long as i got it stripped out today, then tommorow i could start to get the internal wire loom out and clean the interior up.

Ive now done this so many times i belive ive become quite efficient at it, as by mid afternoon it has had - for all intese and purposes - all the interior trim now removed, the only things that are left are the internal loom, the heater and the steering column - but they can come out tomorrow.

Not bad considering to get to this stage with the red ESi took me 2 solid days of work lol!

Being mid afternoon i made a start on removing some of the sound deadening, im not going to remove it all for now, the weather is too warm and humid so instead of chipping off it just melts and goes mushy, so ill leave that till the autumn when its colder - this is when i removed it from the esi - and it was a much easier job.

However it didnt stop me removing the rear section, it just need sanding down and spraying :)

So i had a little clean up, had a bite to eat, then decided to make a small start under the bonnet, so i removed the front bumper, which has held in with all the wrong kinds of fittings - grrr this annoys me muchly! as well and the front head lights and indicators.

I also removed the engines intake piping and filter box - then finding that due to them having an intake feed from the wing, they dont have the hole that goes to the front bumper - a problem when i wanna use a std intake box etc - so dremel to the rescue!

So thats pritty much day one over with, i worked from 9am till about 6pm today, before i was totaly shattered. Im happy with the progress so far, but theres a heck of alot still to be done. Tommorrow im ment to be getting some help (now all the hard work is done lol) so hopefull more piccys will get taken at the least, and the car can get a good clean inside :) then if all goes to plan the D13 can come out monday and then its a case of starting on the hubs, fuel lines, brake lines, fuel tank etc all over - and thats when the fun really starts!

Thanks for reading!

Chris_Gee

Screwed over, a good find, and less than 24hrs to go....

Hi everyone

Yet again i must apologise for not updating for ages...... this is mainly due to everything going very very tits up at the last second and, if you hadn't guessed by the name change - all plans have changed, but its all happened so fast i didn't wanna go posting anything up till i knew for 100% sure what was going on.

Basicaly ill try not to go into too much detail, but the body shop after 7 and a half weeks of having all my body pannels, the go ahead etc - hadnt even made 1% of a start on the new shell - so i told them to jack the whole thing in - i hadnt payed for anything (not even the shell). So after picking up my body pannels and bring it back home i was back to square one.

The shell is still for sale at chartist garage in manchester:http://www.chartistgarage.co.uk/ if anyone in the uk is intrested. It is a very very nice shell - just in primer gray but i wanted my car done for japfest back in may.... then done for Japs (2nd of july) and thanks to being messed about ive missed both those dates - but ill be damned if im missing JAE at the end of july due to other peoples incompetance! (for anyone not in the uk these are all big japanese car shows in the uk)

So if anyone wants it - your welcome to it.....

After being left with a hulk of a shell in the form of an ESi and loads of bits - i needed a new project car, after speaking with freinds they surgested looking into getting a 1.3 DX - its the base model EG hatch sold in the uk, with its 1.3L carb engine, no mod cons, no sun roof, no bump strips, and only weighs in at 920kg's - it sounded perfect if only i could find a good condition one - in like 3 days - yeah like thats gonna happen ???

So me being me i managed to find one lol

J reg (no cat needed for mot)
91.5K miles
no rust
good condition body work
17 inch chrome alloys
Lexarse rear lights
Pioneer and infinity sound system
Clifford Cat 1 alarm and imob
And its white - which is fine with me - ok ok i know it was my life long dream to own a yellow one, but after much soul searching (and i wnat the car done this side of the year 3000) i decided the package was much much more importnat than some colour (as long as it wasnt tiheititititit green ;) )

So i went down, offered him £750 without the wheels (not shockingly) - offer accept and now its my new project car! All the rest of the plans stay the same, just im starting with a very light shell and the colours diffrent ;)

so here it is:

The biggest problem is - its too nice!! the interior is perfect, the engine is sweet - it seams a shame to me to "destroy" it but im sure ill get over such thoughts rather quickly once its all done ;)

Yay chavtastic rear lights!!!

But they didnt last more than 5 mins once i got home

... Long live project Tamama!

For those that care: Tamama is a cartoon charector from the japanese show Stg Frog: http://www.sunrise-inc.co.jp/keroro/

Hes cool, cute and has a jeckle and hyde personality, being calm and none threatening one second - which tho it sucks fortunatly i had 1 week of extra time built into my "plan" (to get the car ready for the 1st of july) for such a screw up, i just hoped to use it for my screw ups not someone elses!

Anyway its ment ive had to put everything back 1 week, my 3 wks off work, rearrange my works weekend call out rota, engine crane hire and trailer hire - well you get the picture EVERYTHING!

So now im gonna go pick it up on the 10th - i think theres also some kind of sporting event "kicking" off the same day....but hey its not as important as my project right lol ;)

Meaning work can start on the 11th and thus updates on here :D

So im sorry for the delay but its not down to me (if it was there wouldnt be a delay :P)

I just want my car back so i can start the build and get it on the road!!!!

Ta

Chris

Car = stress

Well this time next week i should have started work on the project and now be typing up my 1st propper report on how the rebuild is going - to say im rather excited would be an understatement lol!

However the last week and a bit have proven mighty stressful to say the least:

1st i find out my rear passenger ITR trailing arm is bent so ive been rushing around trying to sort another trailing arm out - with new bush only the sodding screws are seized in fast - arrrg!! taking the thing into work tommorow hope to god i can drill them out!

next my wifes EG4 Civic LSi started playing up, stalling and "kangaroo" jumping and being very hesitant on acceleration. After stressing for the last week or so i took it all to bits couldnt find anything worn bput it all back and sudenly its all wokring hunky doory - all this only a few wks after the cam belt snapped oops!

And lastly im still waiting to hear IF i can go pick the car up this saturday from manchester, it better be ready or there WILL be hell to pay!!! They have had all the parts for almost a month how long does it take FFS!

Anyway thats just the main things that are stressing me right now so feel free to skip reading them next time ;)

On wards and upwards i guess :D

On plus side i got my new ITR front upper strutbrace, my ITR radiator, ITR rear calipers, some EG6 VTi clocks/Dials and a nice B16B N1 Race pully!

N1 Pully:

A std honda part, i think it was fitted to the "EK9 Type-Rx" wich didnt have air con or P/S or something... anyway as i have neither also i thought i would get one as i was offered one for a good price.

It weights 828g but i dont think ill be fitting it for a good long while, im a bit worrie about chnaging it and unballancing the bottom end - not good considering how much it cost me! But ill put it somehwere sfae and get the whole bottom end ballance at some point.

Teg Radiator install:

As i mentioned in my previous post, i had made some custom lower mounts - tho they needed drilling and cutting to the right lenght which with the arrival of my teg rad i could now test fit it to my old shell!

So after enlisting the help of my brother we got under way, and its so far pritty good :)

The lower mounts shown here have been cut to length and after one minor drilling mistake are now painted with 2 coats of gray galvinised paint - and then a quick coat of black spray paint to give them some protection.

The top mountings still need some work, i was hoping to adapt a pair of std civic rad supports but they dont seat right, so ive got some teg ones on the way which i can adapt to fit better!

I also managed to get some erm... "unique" shots from inside the engine bay, i sat inside while my bro placed the bonnet on and closed it!

It also gave me the chnace to see if it would clear the rad cap, and the top supports - which it did nicely!

Its a mad last week dash to get all the right odds and sods parts i keep thinking of, and i hope it all comes intime (great planning by me i know). Giving the body shop a call tommroow so pls keep all fingers and toes crossed for good news - either way i shall report back tommroow night, i hope ill be in a good mood not a bad one :D

An average week....

... involes not much else but working on or thinking about this project - or at least thats what it feels like recently lol!

Just a quick update for you on a few "custom" mods ive been working on the past few weeks.

First up my "air box mod"

Nothing hugly dramatic or ground breaking i can assure you, but you might find it intresting.

After having a HKS "mushroom" on my EG6 and quite frankly deciding it was naff, this time round i decided to stick with standard. Forgeting all the equations and formulas etc, no matter what way you look at the design of the std EG air box its pritty complex - this says me to honda spent alot of yen and hours developing it so it must be pritty good? right?

So anyway the only thing i wanted to "add" as a direct cold air feed, the standard intake pipe runs back up into the engine bay drawing in all the loverly warm air heated by the engine itself. As we all know colder the air into the car = a better more efficient burn.

So i got myself some pipe work and random bits of metal with a strange overly complex design in my head and made a start. I wanted a section of hard pipe, so i could then "jubilee clip" a section of flex hose onto, but mounting the hard pipe onto a plastic air box would invole some fabrication - yay my fav!

So i figured if i could mount a plate to the inside of the box, with 4 "tabs" poking out thro a hole. The plates would then attach to the hard pipe, all screw together nice and a solid base would be made!

My 1st attempt at a location for the pipe went horribly wrong, i cut into the diagonal section on the resonator box, thinking it would be an ideal place - wrong! it only pointed the tube 2mm away from the side of the bumper with zero room to fix and bend some flex pipe onto it.
So another air box and a better location (read obviouse doh!) where needed, fortunatly Ben (Civic_EG_Northants) had a spare he kindly donated to the project!

Well i wont go on too much but heres the end result :D

The "flex pipe" will be cut down to lenght but as i dont rightly know how much ill need ill keep it the lenght it is for the moment!

As you can "kind of" see, the metal "tabs, that fix the hard pipe to the metal plate, and the 4 bolts that fix the metal plate to the resonator box itself! All it needs now is some sealant and im contemplating fitting a mesh to fitler out any large stones and other gunk we have left on our loverly "clean" uk roads!

From the view of a tiny air partical about to have the ride of its life lol!

So that combined with a K&N or "spooom y0!" pannel filter will do me just fine!

Next up was reinforcing the front cross member!

A part that is almost always over looked, and ill easily hold my hands up and say this is not my idea i had it surgested to me, and since im uprating my front a/r bar from 21mm to 24mm adding an EG6 VTi reinforcment rod seamed apt.

So now it needs a good lick of hammerite and then its ready for the new shell :D

My teg rad should be here tommorrow, and ive pre made some new "stands" for it to, well, stand on! as it needs to sit lower than the original civic one, and is also full width, so ive had the original rad and air con stands cut off in preperation on the new shell (tho i had already cut them off my old shell). I used the original stands and "made them fit" and weld them to some metal plates, Ive also made them a bit too long (as you can see), but once i have the rad i can figure out where im gonna attach them to, and cut them down to size properly!

The areas ringed blue are where the air con stands where, the area in yellow where the rad stands where.

So expect another mini update tommorrow, ill prob just edit this post tbh!

Ive also just finshed getting my calipers sorted, i had a pair of NSX front calipers which i had used on my old black EG6, ive been "slowly" stripping down all the old red paint off them, so now im thinking either re-paint in red, or maybe a goldish colour (as most std nsx calipers are goldish) or maybe even yellow.. im not sure. Anyway some twin pot NSX goodness for you:

I also got myself some MB6 rear calipers (brand new for only £40 :D) and some prelude carriers to fit the 262mm rear disks, but have now found that where the carrier bolts to the hub the bolt holes are slightly out. So im not sure if ill have to get teg rear calipers in the end, or maybe get my hubs holes changed to suit... prob the latter as im a tight wad, and it will still be strong enough.
These along with goodridge hoses and my ITR Master brake cylinder should provide ample stopping power!

Next up a mod i finished off a good few months back, my Power steering removal Kit!

When i started the project all sorts of ideas where floating in my head, removing the p/s was but one of them, and when my engine turned up it lacked the p/s pump and so kind seatled the deal ;)

Now once i started looking into it, it became apparent that there was as ever mor ethan one way to go about it. The first being a stright loop from "intake" to "exhaust" but this made for a heavey turn, and made checking the level and topping up/chnaging the fluid hard. The other way was to loop the in and out, as well as a "t" piece connected to a resoviour. this would allow the system to "breath" and made topping up and changing the fluid easier!

Now a guy on hondatech.com (y0!) makes these kits, and agreed to make up and sell me one, but we lost contact over christmas so i thought why not make my own?

So once more to work my freinds! My job dealing with instruments and electronics all day long means I deal with lot of pipe work and fittings - all the parts i needed!

So a few bits of bent 8mm pipe, one rather expencive high pressure fitting, the 2 std pipe fittings, some flex pipe, a few small hose clips and a spare std civic clutch res later:

The black hose running off to the left leads to the res, which im still deciding where to mount it, but ill decide once the engine is in!

I needed to test fit it to my ITR steering rack, to see if i would have any issure with the carbon canister and the rear engine mount but i think ill be ok!

Ive also been busying myself with a few "how 2's" most recent has been how to fit 5 stud to a 4 stud civic, this will be posted up on the various forums i frequent as soon as its ready, im trying hard to make it "idiot" proof and include lots of purty piccys :D

Anway thats all for now, thanks for reading!

Chris_Gee

And so a new year .....

So 2006 started, more stripping (of the car :P), more parts buying, while trying hard to find a good body shop to respray my car yellow and sort a few spots of the usual EG civic rust. While also test fitting a few parts like the 5 stud conversion, ITR steering rack and other bits.

Mmmmm test fitting my EK9 alloys with my NSX calipers for clearance.

A genuine B16B from hondas Infamous EK9 Civic Type-R, the engine has so far been the most costly part at £2300, but with only 20K miles on it, its a prime example :)

Time dragged.... on and on.... and before I knew it, suddenly it was the start of April, the car was in a state ready to be shiped off to the body shop, but without a body shop planned to do the work (not a good start)!

So I started to look into the job with more vigor, but as i do so I realised both rear 1/4 pannels would need replacing (not an easy or cheap job to have done) and at £600 + the vat for 2 new sides with welding on top, my budget was looking to be destroyed.

The driveside is the worst, lots of rust around the bump strip clip holes (which i want filled in anyway), a badly fixed rear arch repair and some slight accident damage, the passengerside wasnt as bad but the sill had also gone :(

However I remember seeing a brand new shell for sale on the HondaRevolutions club forum just before christmas, if the price was right it and it wasnt yet sold it could be my new shell - heck I could even have the "worlds" only 2006 registered 06 plated EG civic - and that would earn much kudos (yes im sad so sue me :P )

So I called the garage who owned it, they only wanted £850 for it (not much more than trying to fix my existing shell) and were specialists in race and rally car preperation - this was too good to be true! So a few phone calls later and the deal was done, the shell was mine, and better they could arrange spraying etc all for the same cost of just respraying my existing shell O_O Over the moon would be a good way to describe my mood!

In the next few days I posted questions on many other car forums for help with the Dvla side of how I would register my car and other problems. After calling and then visiting the dvla office in Birmingham I was told I could never have an 06 registered Civic as hoped, but could "re-shell" my existing car (with resevations and rules) or it would go on a Q plate like kit cars etc (which I dont realy want).

The basic rules I needed to abide by where:

Vehicles that have been rebuilt using a mix of new/used parts.
In order to retain the original registration mark:

Cars and Car-Derived Vans must use:

The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or

A new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer/manufacturer (e.g. receipt)

And two other major components from the original vehicle - see list below

Suspension (front & back)
Axles (both)
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine

(info taken directly form http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regrebil.htm all rights reserved and all that Copy right stuff)

This provided some "intresting" problems for me, the basic task wouldn't be hard, however out of the 5 components listed, im changing all of them lol
Another problem was that for all the main parts that i have changed they needed recipts, and since most of my parts where bought from club sites and forums ive been in a desperate rush the past few weeks to get back in touch with sellers and have them make me out recipts :D Plus one good side to being a horder of parts ive retained lots of the std parts so I can put my 4 stud hubs on, with my std saggy 156K mile suspension it will pass their inspection and I can always change back to the ITR 5 stud etc the day after the test ;)

And now your just about up to date, just today (22nd April 06) I delivered my other doors, wings etc to the garage for spraying, talked about what other features they can arrange for me to make it into more of a track day beast, and now im left waiting for the job to be done (talk about kid waiting for christmas lol) so i thought i would start this blog now to get all the back ground info typed up etc :)

The plan for this blog:

Ive booked 3 wks off work in june (my Mrs has exams so i needed to take some time off anyway) to rebuild my car from now two bare shells and a BIG pile of parts, into one fully working MOT passed track car, with a little help from my mates naturaly ;) Im planning on keeping this blog up to date daily with the ups and downs of the rebuild, as well as pictures of how its going (or not going)!

So if you know me - expect phone calls and to be giving up your june wkends to help me! lol

I do hope you find the project intresting and that you will pop back in June to see how its going, and the finished result!

Until then!

Chris_Gee

Welcome to Project Kiiro Saru!

Hi everyone

Your probably wondering what my blog is about, so I'll get it out of the way so you can go read someone elses if it doesn't interest you...

Dont all leave pls lol

The basic concept of this blog is to keep track of the rebuilding of my 1991 Honda Civic EG5 hatchback, from working car, to shell, to erm better working track slag ;)

Sound intresting?

A short history for you:

Ive been into messing with cars since an early age, my dad used to mess with cars in the 60's and 70's, and would always rope myself and my older brother into helping do oil changes etc as we grew up. So it was only natural that when we were both old enough to drive we caught the bug.

For me - it was Honda 1992-1995 (EG) Civic hatchback, I love them!
I bought my 1st in september 2001, a black 1992 K plate EG6 VTi and over the next few years leant more about the car and loved it to bits

My old black munkee Civic VTi.

But even by late 2003, and with plans still on going with my VTi, I had decided in the future I would love a project to test my own skills and knowledge!

I wont bore you too much with the to'ing and fro'ing and 1000's of ideas I had over the next year or more but lets just say by August 2005 I had finaly settled on one:

A Carnival Yellow track Civic

The following mods and parts have been picked up or done over the last 8 months lets just say i get lucky with car parts ;)

B16B EK9 Engine and gear box
5 stud conversion
ITR and EK9 alloys
ITR steeirng rack
ITR suspension
ITR front 24mm A/R bar
Std rear 16mm A/R bar
NSX calipers with 282mm front disks
MB6 calipers with 262mm rear disks
Fully stripped out shell
Black VTi Dash and dials
JDM tail gate
JDM Rear spoiler with brake light
Lots of other cool JDM bits and mods too small to mention now but will mention later.

Finished off with my usual zero regard for what anyone thought of it, only that it would be MY ultimate EG civic so :P to you all lol!

So 1st a good base car was needed, which turned out to be a very early (1991 J reg registered) Milano Red ESi EG5. With its 1.6 SOHC (vtech y0! ;) ) engine, disks all round, and £250 price tag it was a bargian I couldnt pass up (one of a great many).

Aww bless look how std it was (picture at the top)

Thats my JDM Munkee in the passenger seat, hes currently running 29psi of boost ;)

My ickle D16Z6, it ran fine for all of 5 mins once i put the right amounts of oil and coolant in it 0_0

It didnt last long within hours the engine was out and being sold off, and over the next few months slowly (its cold in winter you know and im incessently lazy) the interior came out, the sound deadening was painstakingly removed and sanded down, and lots and lots of mods where bought for the usual "Chris_Gee" prices ;)

And thus the car ended 2005 alot diffrent to how it had started it, with a new owner, and a radicaly diffrent "look" lol

Inside the cockpit!

And the engine bay
Yay lots of strippageness!
